How to measure the length

The metre is the unit of measurement for length.

But you can't measure everything in metres. Try to measure the length of a road. The number is too big! That is why multiples exist: decametre, hectometre and kilometre.

Now, try to measure the perimeter of a polygon.. do you need a metre? No, its submultiples are enough: decimetre, centimetre and millimetre.

How to do unit conversions

The value of every digit depends on its position!

You can express the length of an object by using different units of measurement. You just have to do conversions!

If you want to convert from a larger measurement to a smaller measurement (moving to the right in the table), you have to multiply by 10, 100 or 1000.

On the other side, if you want to convert from a smaller measurement to a larger one (moving to the left in the table), you have to divide by 10, 100 or 1000.
